« Bond Yields Decline Amid Profit-Taking, Federal Reserve’s Hawkish Comments

BY REUTERS Posted 2/9/2007 Treasury debt prices fell Friday amid profit-taking that followed gains earlier in the week and warnings from a Federal Reserve official that he will press for higher interest rates if inflation does not moderate. The man who has been appointed to review a death in custody on Palm Island in north Queensland says he expects the process to be over within a few weeks.

Sir Laurence Street, a former New South Wales chief justice, has been appointed by the Queensland Government to give a second opinion on a decision by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) not to charge a policeman over the 2004 death of an Indigenous man known as Mulrunji.

A coroner had found Senior Sergeant Chris Hurley was responsible for the death of Mulrunji, but DPP Leanne Clare found it appeared to be accidental.

Sir Laurence has told ABC Radio’s AM he has only read the occasional article on the story.

But he says he is fully committed to the case.

“It’s a professional engagement and I don’t anticipate any difficulty in discharging it,” he said.

“But I don’t minimise the sensitivity and importance. It’s got to be done properly and carefully and thoroughly and correctly.”Support

There has been strong support for the appointment of Sir Laurence to review the death in custody ruling.

The lawyer representing Mulrunji’s family, Frederick Cassis, believes Sir Laurence will examine the case thoroughly.

“He was chief justice in New South Wales for a very long time and he has an enormous reputation in legal circles,” he said.

“I’m sure he will approach the task at the highest level.”

Aboriginal activist Gracelyn Smallwood says there is a high level of confidence in this appointment.

“We are hoping for a very positive outcome, justice is what we want and we are hoping justice will be done in this particular case.” In other developments:
