The British No1 has been hampered in past matches by a lack of stamina, but handled the 94-degree heat well at the Vodafone Arena to overcome Verdasco 7-6 (7-4), 7-5, 6-4 and set up a third round meeting with Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela. “It was really tough today,” said Murray. “The conditions...

Trapped taxi driver haunted by memories of crash ordeal »

TAXI driver Sharon Wilson is still haunted by flashbacks from her terrifying ordeal. The grandmother-of-three was trapped for four hours after a skip fell from a lorry and landed on her cab, crushing the roof around her. One of the firefighters who painstakingly cut her free from the wreckage said the accident was the worst he had seen where the victim survived. Today, as the 44-year-old picked up the keys to her new taxi, she revealed she is still too traumatised to return to the job...

In the 1970s, hi-fi stereo wasn’t enough, so you went quadraphonic. In the early 1980s, a simple VCR wasn’t enough. You wanted portable and you wanted stereo, so you went and spent a thousand bucks. In the early 1990s, you dropped $500 on a brick-sized cell phone. In the late ’90s, you dropped another $800 on a first-generation PDA. Now you want to drop $500 on a new Apple iPhone. I’m not going to say whether that’s a good idea or not. That’s for...

The Bank of Japan, in a meeting of its policy board last month, held the key interest rate at 0.25...
