The life of the iconic late Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain is to be made into a new Hollywood film. The screenwriter David Benioff is to adapt Charles Cross’ biography, Heavier Than Heaven, which is partly based on Cobain’s unpublished diaries as well as interviews with friends and family members.

The story remains under wraps and it is unclear whether original music rights have been secured. Cobain died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in 1994, leaving behind his wife Courtney Love and a daughter, Frances Bean.

The legend of Cobain’s life and death has inspired writers and film-makers ever since the musician’s untimely demise. Earlier this year AJ Schnack’s documentary Kurt Cobain About A Son premiered at Sundance, while Gus Van Sant paid tribute in his 2005 film Last Days, which starred Michael Pitt as a Seattle musician who bore strong similarities to Cobain.

The new film is being jointly made by Working Title and Universal Pictures. Benioff adapted The Kite Runner for director Marc Forster, and also wrote the upcoming X-Men spin-off Wolverine.
